Shielding pickup and control cavities can reduce the amount of noise you notice (especially with high gain) from your guitar. That's because pickups...well.. they're designed to pickup environmental signals like strings vibrating, but also accidental EMF noise from nearby devices like computers, displays and lights. Here's a nice Strat that was much quieter after shielding:
